Currently, local business
organizations in Ivano-Frankivsk seem to be either sector
specific, government dominated and lack input into the
economic planning of their community. An introduction to
and adoption of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce style
with heavy private sector involvement in economic
development, coordinated business lobbying with
government, leadership in local business programs and
promotion of local business interests abroad is
necessary. The creation and active participation of a
local Chamber of Commerce that represents the private
sector in the economic planning for the community will
help move the community away from a top down government
driven economy to one that is market driven. The
Ukrainian Partners recognize and support this initiative
as a necessary step in local economic planning transition
to community participation.
To increase business
opportunities for Ivano-Frankivsk, it is necessary to
prepare the community to host foreign business,
especially Canadian, people wishing to visit the
community in order to explore exporting and importing
opportunities. Trade development programs for Ukrainian
and Canadian business people for the importing and
exporting of products and services, including
opportunities for partnerships and alliances, will foster
an expanded and mutually beneficial relationship between
Canada and Ukraine. Individual Canadian companies
desiring to conduct business in the region require
business services including translation, meeting space,
telecommunications, temporary offices, information
resources and a source of advisory assistance.
Serious communication
problems hamper the speed of economic development in
Ukrainian regions. Ukrainian companies need to be put on
the information highway with current technologies, in
order to provide easier access to business information on
companies in the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, for improved
business opportunities worldwide through the effective
use of electronic advertising and promotion on online
services such as the Internet.
Confederation College will
help create a Western Chamber of Commerce in
Ivano-Frankivsk and help it develop the international
marketing skills to promote its community. An important
part of this program will involve a partnership with the
successful Confederation College trade mission program
for Canadian business people interested in international
trade. SBEDIF staff will be proactive in Canada and
Ukraine in providing business contacts for potential
Canadian-Ukrainian trade ventures for Canadians and
Ukrainians. With the location of a Canadian-run office in
Ivano-Frankivsk, opportunities for a higher level of
business opportunity analysis will exist. Services on a
cost-recovery basis for Canadian companies as well as
Ukrainian companies will be encouraged.
